August Tournament Recap
We had 22 senior division anglers and 4 Jr. division anglers for our August 2013 Nevada Striper Club tournament; not bad for a mid-summer tournament. It should be cooler in September so let’s get out there and fish this month. As many of you know summer fishing can be a challenge with the big fish hiding who knows where and their metabolisms slowed in the warmer water finding the big one can be tough.

There are those who fish hard and seem to make it happen on a pretty regular basis. Some of them show up on the podium pretty regularly. The difference between 1st place Roger Batson@15.80 and 2nd place Ciprian Cimpan @15.65 was a mere 1.5oz. But just so you do not feel too bad for Ciprian he had Big Fish at a very nice 7.55 dandy. The rest of the seniors on the podium were Chris Madden in 3rd and Tom Lucero in 4th place.

The Jr. division had 4 anglers; Cody Steckle had a bag of 8.45lbs Austin Madden 6.45lbs Jayden Warren 6.20lbs Kylee Warren 6.15lbs Congratulations to all and I hope to be writing about your Big Bag next month but it will not happen if you’re not fishin.

Letter From The Prez
As we enter the spring fishing season the weather is changing the temps aren't as hot and the bite gets better. I myself enjoy fishing the spring more than any other time of the year. The cooler nights make for great camping weather with the family. Plus the fishing can get fast and heavy which keeps the excitement going and makes for good times with the kids grandkids etc. So go fish have fun and share the experience with others.

I'd like to remind all members the Cast for Kids is coming up along with another adopt a cove as well as a BBQ at Bass Pro shop. So let's get some volunteers for these events. If anybody has ideas of other fundraisers I'd like to hear them.

Happy Fishing!

Brad Anderson

Hook, Line, and Sinker
What’s with the water levels in Lake Mead The current 8/31/2013 level at Lake Mead was 1106.07, on 7/71/2013 it was 1105.92. The level as you can see was up slightly; well that is the good news. The other news is that according to US Bureau of Reclamation the level may drop another 25 feet by November 2014 and to a historic low of 1075. By April 2015. To compare that with something we have seen recently the Lake level was at 1081.94 in November of 2010.

As you can see there will be challenges navigating with the lowering levels, so as always be aware of “new “rocks, reefs and islands any time you are on the water. Please travel at a safe speed and as always boat sober.
Another bit of Good News is that while the lake volume may be diminishing the number of Striped Bass certainly do not seem to be diminishing so… the fish are getting closer together and so should be easier to find. Now we don’t want the Striped Bass to become anymore overpopulated so we all need to do our part to thin them out a little. So get out there and go fishin. For some of the readers out there who may not yet know the secrets to catching Stripers in Lake Mead there is a Nevada Striper Club meeting the 2nd Thursday of most months in the Conservation Room at the Bass Pro Shop. If you want to stop by please do as nonmembers are always welcome and encouraged to attend and pick up some pointers.

Fishing Report
We hit the Vegas wash at 6:30 AM to find a guide boat and about 15 other angling vessels already there jigging spoons. The fish finder was loaded with fish at about 80 feet. After witnessing anglers jigging spoons for an hour and no fish being caught, we left the area.

Searching the local areas like 33 hole, Government Wash, and Sand Island we found no large schools fish, just a few here and there. Fish Hatchery Cove and Crawdad Cove, just to the north, also showed a lack of fish.

Then, around 10 AM, the boils started over by Black Island. Small fish, but they were biting. 3/4 ounce castmaster and small anchovy chunks caught fish. They were 1 to 1-1/2 pound Stripers with a good fight in them. A gut check showed they were eating Shad fry measuring about 1/2 an inch in length.

These Stripers were gorging themselves on these little baits and anything that resembling a shad got hit. A can of corn may get those fish active and biting too. You may have to move around to find the fish. Areas like Sand Island and the intake tower have been good for past September tournaments. Some areas like Kingman Wash, the mouth of Callville Bay, and up north by Echo Bay are often overlooked.
